Conductor of Bristol University Chamber Orchestra

ConductingChamberOrchestra

In 2021, I began conducting the Bristol University Chamber Orchestra, a phenomenal experience with a wonderfully impressive, skilled, and enthusiastic ensemble. Together we have delivered an outstanding programme of concerts over the course of the academic year in venues from Bristol Victoria Rooms to Cologne, including collaborations with the Bristol University Chamber Choir.

Over a series of seven concerts our repertoire has included Beethoven: Egmont Overture, Ravel: Le Tombeau de Couperin, De Falla: El Amor Brujo and Haydn: London Symphony No.104.

During my tenure, I received mentoring from Dr Jonathan James, an internationally renowned conductor and educator, who particularly instructed me on how to express the music through my gestures. This was a great opportunity to develop my rehearsal technique and musical communication skills.

Furthermore, working with individual soloists (including for Krommer’s Concerto No.2 for 2 Clarinets, Op.91) on the music developed my understanding of orchestral instruments, balance, and timbre. Under my direction, the ensemble has matured in their technical assurance, musical sensitivity, and stylistic interpretation of repertoire.

Personally, I have enjoyed feeling a profound sense of growth as a conductor and I will continue to hone my practice in the future.
